Country, regional or global?

Plan typeBest forWatch out for
Country planOne-country holidays or work tripsIt may stop working when you cross the border
Regional planMulti-country trips in one regionCheck each country, including islands and territories
Global planComplex routes across regionsHigher overall cost if you only visit one or two countries

Nomad offers local, regional and global categories. That is a useful starting point, but the plan card is the final word. Check the exact covered-country list, data allowance and validity before you buy.

Choose data by how you travel

You do not need a giant plan for every trip. Maps, messaging and browsing use far less than video calls, cloud backups and laptop tethering.

Traveller typeSensible starting amountWhy
Weekend city break1–3GBMaps, bookings, messages and light social use
One-week holiday3–10GBAdds ride apps, photos and regular browsing
Two-week active trip10–20GBBetter buffer for video, translation and sharing
Remote-work backup20GB+Hotspot and laptop use can burn data quickly

Treat these as planning ranges, not promises. Video auto-play, photo sync and hotspot use can change the result dramatically.

Best plan styles by route

USA

Choose a country plan when the USA is your only stop. It is usually simpler than paying for regional coverage you will not use. For a USA + Canada or USA + Europe route, compare a relevant multi-country option. See Nomad USA eSIM coupon and plans for the destination-specific checklist.

Europe

Europe is where regional coverage earns its keep. A train trip through France, Italy, Germany and Spain is awkward with several individual plans. Before choosing, check the actual included-country list and whether your route includes non-EU stops, islands or a UK leg. Read Nomad Europe eSIM.

Japan

For Japan-only travel, a local plan is normally the cleanest place to start. Pick data based on navigation, translation, booking apps and whether you will tether a laptop. Coverage and speed vary by place and time, so no plan should be sold as a blanket "perfect everywhere" answer. See Nomad Japan eSIM.

Thailand

Thailand has an important rule: Nomad's Unlimited Thailand products and Thailand 50GB/10-day plan cannot use promo codes. Some Thailand plans also have different activation timing, so do not install special Thailand plans before arrival. See Nomad Thailand eSIM.

Add-ons and validity

Nomad says some eSIMs allow add-ons, letting you continue with the same profile. Not every plan supports this, and leftover data does not roll into the add-on. Add data before the plan expires or runs out; afterwards, you may need a new plan. See how to add more data to a Nomad eSIM.

Validity cannot simply be extended. If your trip is uncertain, choose a plan length with a small buffer or wait until travel dates are firm. Remember that most unused Nomad eSIMs auto-activate 60 days after purchase.

Setup checklist before buying

  • Check that your phone is eSIM-compatible and carrier-unlocked.
  • Confirm all destination countries on the exact plan page.
  • Decide if you need data only or a rare plan with voice inclusions — see calls and texts.
  • Save the checkout price after applying ESIMDUDE15.
  • Install with stable Wi-Fi — see how to use Nomad eSIM.
  • Keep your home SIM for calls/texts only if needed, and disable automatic data switching.

FAQ

Which Nomad plan is best for Europe?

A Europe regional plan usually makes sense for several included European countries. Check the live country list before purchase.

Can I top up a Nomad eSIM?

Some active, unexpired plans support add-ons. Nomad says not every plan supports them and unused data does not roll over.

Does Nomad support hotspot?

Most Nomad eSIMs support hotspot/tethering, but device and local-network conditions can affect stability.

Can I use ESIMDUDE15 on Thailand plans?

Not on Nomad Unlimited Thailand plans or the Thailand 50GB, 10-day plan. Check the live checkout for all other eligibility.

Bottom line

Buy a country plan for one country, a regional plan for a real multi-country route, and global coverage only when it saves you from several separate purchases. Then use ESIMDUDE15 where eligible and install at the right time.
